PROJECT DESCRIPTION TIMELINE
mountaindale art center & sculpture garden

In partnership with local sculptor, the late Peter Mott, MDCP inaugurated its public sculpture park in September 2004. Featuring more than 15 works of welded steel and stone by the talented Ellenville-based Mott, the garden occupies almost a 1/4 acre to the east of the old school. Peter was a true friend of the arts in Mountaindale and he is greatly missed but our lives are enriched by his continued presence.  Read more . . . .

Opened September 2004

Rails to Trails Adult Fitness Area

Using equipment generously donated by the Town of Fallsburg, we built a fitness area at the Rails to Trails Trailhead. Already installed are the pull-up and push up stations; soon to come are dips, sit-ups, an overhead ladder, side jump and leg press. The fitness area will be an excellent complement to our Rail Trail, which offers biking, hiking and running for the whole family. Read more . . . .

Phase I Completed: August 2004

Phase II: Spring 2005

Sandburg Creek RiverWalk Trail

In order to provide access to Sandburg Creek, connect the creek to the visitor center, and provide an innovative attraction for both residents and visitors, MCDP  worked to create a unique walking park along the banks of the Sandburg Creek directly behind the old school. The RiverWalk  includes walking paths, picnic tables, environmental education information, and hopefully a birding platform, creating a special learning environment and contemplative space for all of Sullivan County.  Also already completed are the pedestrian bridge over the Sandburg Creek and a unique Meditation Labyrinth

Completion: Summer 2009

O&W Rail Trail Extension

A joint effort of MCDP and the Catskill Center for Conservation & Development, we are working to make the dream of a completed Rail Trail from Liberty to the D&H Tow Path a reality.

Working closely with the Town of Fallsburg, the Village of Woodridge, Sullivan Renaissance, the Sullivan Striders Club, Sullivan County and other government agencies, we are bringing together the needed public and private resources so that residences and visitors alike can walk, run, bike and ski along one of the regions most beautiful and historic greenways.

A big step in this effort was the development of the section between Woodridge and the Neversink River, which was completed in 2010. Click here or call 845-434-5446 to get involved!

Start Date: Fall 2004
Mountaindale Murals

Two murals were painted by local artist Ann Krajewski: one next door to the Post Office; the other on the wall of 81 Main Street, next door to the old school. The Post Office mural depicts the old O&W railroad which ran through town; the 81 Main work shows our charming rejuvenated Main Street. Funding for these projects were provided through a special arts grant from the offices of New York State Senator John J. Bonacic.

Rails to Trails Train Station Visitors Center

The Rails to Trails Train Station Visitors Center was completed by the Town of Fallsburg in 2009.  We are actively pursuing partnerships with the local education community and other non-profit organizations in order to provide a wide range of quality programming in this beautiful space.  MCDP Board members, Ken & Barb Schmitt, donated hours of time to coordinate the installation of an extraordinary permanent exhibit of photographs of antique O&W Railway trains which ran through Mountaindale prior to the 1950's.  Completion Date: Fall 2009

Mountaindale Rail Trail Guide & Map

As Mountaindale is already home to many avid hikers, cyclists, and numerous visitors who come to us to enjoy the Rail Trail.  Through a  generous Community Development grant by Sullivan Renaissance, MCDP is producing a trail guide and Interpretive signage for the Rail Trail between the Visitors Center in Mountaindale, though Woodridge and beyond to the Trailhead at the Neversink River.

Anticipated Completion Date: Fall 2010
Mountaindale Visitor Guide

The companion to the Rail Trail Guide, the visitor guide will be a comprehensive list of local attractions, businesses, services and events for residents, second home-owners and tourists. It will highlight the best the Mountaindale and the surrounding area have to offer.

Anticipated Completion Date: Unknown
